The collection of paintings formed by Jacob Epstein is unusual for its wide scope and for the high quality of the examples of which it is comprised. It is the collection of a connoisseur containing not the orthodox list of artists but unusual men whose works are seldom found outside of large collections. In each case, however, the painting has been included because of its inherent high quality. In a collection of twenty-two paintings to find two examples of Sustermans, a Titian, a Van Dyck, a Goya, a Raphael, a Tintoretto, a Hals, a Rembrandt, a Reynolds and a Corot, opens a vista of unmeasured delight to the visitor. The collection is varied in subject, school and period. It contains examples of all the great schools of the past -- the Italian, the Flemish, the Spanish, the Dutch, the French and the English.
